This is utterly despicable. Labeling people who are simply trying to be their authentic selves as "mentally ill" is absurd. I'm beginning to think these depraved sociopaths are just allergic to happiness.

This is just as bad as the bathroom bills - policing people’s bodies again.

The real mental illness here is being so obsessed with trans people. I'm trans and I don't think about trans people as much as Republicans do.

I'm queer and I don't think about queer people as much as Republicans.

Flood the phones in Frankfort if you live in Kentucky. Let your state representatives and senators know how you feel about this amendment regardless if they are Democrat or Republican!

Well, to be clear, ANY Democratic senator could be that "brave" soul to stand up and say they oppose the fast-tracking of the Sex Williams amendment, thus invoking debate, testimony, etc. Will not a single Democrat stand up for us? This is simply the latest example of Democrats throwing us under the bus.

When Democrats wonder why I am no longer such an incredibly generous campaign contributor, I tell them this is why. If they are so willing to throw me under the bus out of political convenience, then I would frankly rather do other things with my money. The only Democrats who get my money (like their governor) are those who are outspoken on our behalf. The rest may get my vote as the lesser of two evils - if I can be inconvenienced to drag myself to the polls on their behalf - but I'm going to make them a priority as much as they make me a priority.

A different subsection of same section of the ADA also lists gay and bi people as explicitly not covered either, so they have room to apply it broadly to the entire rainbow family. Not so subtle reminder to the pick me gays that we're all in this together...

Aleksandra Vaca's avatar

The way it's written wouldn't include gay and bi people, but that doesn't mean similar language can't be used by a different bill in the future...

Mandi Cooper's avatar

It would be harder to apply to gay/bi people with Trans people there are name changes and gender market changes and actual medical diagnosis before hormones and surgery, none of that is needed to be gay, you can be very under the radar gay (I am not, I have no interest in not being my authentic self), but you could be. This whole bill screams HIPPA violation to me. They shouldn't be looking at your medical records! Pedophilia and Kleptomania are things you generally don't get diagnosed with unless you have commit a crime, there is no crime involved with being trans. I honestly don't see why a gambling addiction would bar someone from being a teacher either or how anyone would even find out as long as that person kept showing up to work on time. This whole bill is pretty stupid.

Not that I needed another reason not to visit KY or buy any bourbon they produce….

Well, the Sun isn’t shining bright in the old Kentucky Home… it’s been eclipsed by the Republican Party who has/is redefining medical diagnostic terms and conditions inorder to deprive well qualified teachers of their teaching license in order to satisfy their own hate filled beliefs that have no basis in science, let alone in reality..

These hate filled actions are spreading across the country and like Idaho we can expect arrest and imprisonment just because we have to exercise our physical urge to , well you know. PEE… OPPs, it’s not Peeing.. it’s where..

so, keep the home fires burning.. in your old Kentucky home..,

FWIW, the PacNW has some excellent distilleries, and we're trans friendly.

Why are we using the DSM III as a standard??? This is bonkers. As a trans teacher who loves my job this makes me feel so incredibly sad.

They won't get us all. We seem to have a growing diaspora.

Personally spoke with a ky dem state senator who said he will vote against any bill that harms the trans community. There will at least be some resistance.

Aleksandra Vaca's avatar

I’ve been hearing from many different Kentucky journalists/politicians that enough opposition has materialized that the Senate GOP will likely force the sponsor to withdraw the amendment in order to pass the bill quickly (and avoid the debate).

Thank you for contacting your senator and making him aware of this :)

Very telling that Republicans focus on legislation like this rather than actually supporting teachers.
