Under the proposed rule, trans people buying guns will be forced to choose between facing scrutiny over ID mismatches and being denied a sale or selecting their gender identity and committing perjury.
I think you're overlooking what could be the main reason for this policy, besides cruelty. When you indicate that you are a person with a female name, assigned male at birth (or vice versa), you are outing yourself as trans. I think the gun shop owners couldn't care less about that. These people just want to sell a gun, and they truly believe nobody should be denied the right to own one on purely specious grounds. They would see trans people as the canaries in the coal mine and realize that other gun owners/buyers are next. I ordinarily live in redneck country, and I honestly don't think anyone would blink twice if I said, "I'm a trans woman, and I need to buy a gun to protect myself from the gubmint."
The entity that REALLY wants to know you're trans is the federal government. They're making lists of Jews, autistic people, and trans people. IMO, they want to know who to come for, and they want to know if you own a gun before beating down your door.
The CDC makes similar lists. If you want to schedule a COVID vaccination through the CDC, you have to give them your sex assigned at birth - or lie about it. No declaration of SAAB, no vaccine.
Oh, and my advice if you do want a gun: Even if a gun store is happy to sell it to you, buy it at a gun show or from a private party, so you won't be added to any government list as a trans person with a gun.
I walked into a local gunshop as a non-passing MtF trans person. The shop was actually a gathering point for various MAGA leaning customers. There was currently a small group that I overheard talking about politics and the damned 'libtards' ruining the country. I began to fear that something bad might happen.
But the man behind the counter greated me warmly, made the sale, and thanked me by name on my way out. And the gaggle of good ol' boys never so much as blinked an eye.
I think this is the rule, not the exception. At least anywhere other than the most red areas.
It will be interesting to see which gun rights group show up in opposition to this rule.
This is a real test of their integrity in support for the 2nd Amendment, anything less than full opposition is proof they only support gun ownership for their own political purposes.
It depends. The public comment period is 90 days, but after that ends, it fairly uncertain how long it'll take to be finalized. Probably around a month after that though.
That's a good narrative to have if we want the backing of the Second Amendment folks. However, we all need to be sober about where this all really comes from: The religious right wants LGBTQ people eradicated as a primary goal, because they think we make the world "ungodly" and because they believe their god punishes all of the world for tolerating "ungodly" people like us. That's right! All the famine, wars, disease, poverty, strife, "act of god" natural disasters, and general misery is partially OUR fault, according to them. There are several interest groups propping up this regime, but the religious right is perhaps the most powerful

All this will accomplish would be to drive trans gun purchases underground, or make strawman purchases even more common.
